History of NAWIC
Wichita Chapter #120 was chartered March 1966 by the Kansas City, MO Chapter #100. There were 90+ chartering members who signed the charter. The first educational scholarship awarded to a student going into the construction industry was awarded in 1966.
In the early days the Wichita ladies raised funds for the chapter and scholarship funding by holding Las Vegas Nights. They were a big hit and much needed funds were raised for the chapter activities. The Las Vegas Nights stopped when it was made clear they could be viewed by authorities as gambling. Fund raising activities then consisted of "selling" - selling everything from table clothes to tickets for chicken & noodle dinners at G & G Catering. The members waited tables for this G & G affair. For a number of years an auction before the Christmas Holiday was held with members donating craft items. In order to keep the local dues low, the members volunteered for a number of fund raising events.
In 1991 the Wichita members ventured in to the Golf Tournament for raising funds for the Scholarship. It has grown over the years and been very successful in raising funds to help our young people wanting a career in the construction industry.
Chapter #120 has awarded over $100,000.00 over the last 40 years - starting out "small" with few awards and growing over the years. Since 1998 Wichita has awarded 86 grants totaling over $50,000.
The annual Block Kids Competition for grade school children has become well known and well received throughout the construction community in Kansas. Fifteen years ago, in 1991, the competition was held for the first time and for 2 years the number of children participating was 30 - 45. The 3rd year of the competitions was held on WSU Campus and there were 125 children in attendance. The participation has stayed very consistent each year with approximately 100+ kids in attendance. The WABA has played a very big role in helping NAWIC sponsor this competition - were it not for them we could not possibly have one of the largest competitions in the country. In 2006, there were 135 children taking part in this annual competition, the future of the construction industry. The 2006 BK winner’s project was entered in the Region 6 competition.
